Acadia Heating and Cooling System

What is a "Hybrid" System? Well, it's just like a hybrid car that uses both gasoline and electricity. A Hybrid System uses a combination of electricity and either oil or LP for heat. The source is a heat pump. It looks just like the outdoor unit of an air conditioner. The term heat pump is not a good one because it actually heats and cools. Yes, you get air conditioning all built into one system!

How does it work? A Hybrid System simply extracts the heat that's present in outdoor air in the winter and delivers it inside your home to keep you warm and comfortable. Yes, heat is present in all air - even air that's well below freezing! When the temperature outside is 37 degrees or higher, the Hybrid System uses electricity to heat your home. When it's really cold outside, the system automatically switches to oil or gas for better efficiency. In the summer, the process reverses. The heat pump pulls heat out of indoor air and releases it outside to keep your home cool and comfortable.

What are the benefits of a Hybrid System? Operating costs are lower! A Hybrid System will reduce your home heating bills and save energy for the environment. While saving money, you will also be more comfortable. Standard gas heating systems send off a blast of hot air when it goes on and off. A Hybrid System provides more even heat that helps take away temperature swings from room to room.

Geothermal Heating & Cooling Systems

Your own backyard has the potential to be an energy source for heating and cooling comfort. Outdoor air temperatures fluctuate throughout the year. However, dig down about four to six feet and you will find the ground's temperature remains approximately 55 degrees all year. By tapping this steady flow of heat from the earth in the winter, and putting it back in the earth in the summer, a Geothermal System can save homeowners 40 to 70 percent in heating costs and 30 to 50 percent in cooling costs.

There are a few different options on how to install a Geothermal System which include a closed or open vertical loop, horizontal loop and pond loop. In Massachusetts, the most common is a closed, vertical loop. This loop is used mainly when land area is limited and in retrofit of existing homes. A drilling rig is used to bore holes at a depth of 150 to 200 feet. A U-shaped coil of high density pipe is inserted into the bore hole. The holes are then backfilled with a sealing solution.
